Winning Metrics > Live ShotQuality Points per Possession
The team's ShotQuality expected offensive rating (points per 100 possessions).
his is a luck-adjusted metric that measures the team's average points scored on an identical sample of shots (incorporating shot context, player ability, and opponent). This is valuable because it reflects in-game information, namely the quality of shots, and is more predictive of the remainder of the game. Once we learn how the game is played after several minutes, team shot selection stays relatively consistent (i.e. lots of open threes, few shots in the paint), but shooting result can vary (i.e. three-point shooting luck). ShotQuality Points per Possession isolates the “sticky” components of team performance to create a more accurate forecast.
